There's also currently a very good fluffy seasonal that's airing right now called Yano-kun's ordinary days that I'd recommend

If you crave for more Evangelion, I severely recommend watching at some point Rebuild of Eva
Other than that, there's also Ideon, an anime from the 80s that inspired Eva
Not Eva-related but I also recommend Legend of the Galactic Heroes (OVAs - long anime) and Haibane Renmei (short anime) too!

Yes, in terms of litteral events, it's really awful and depressing
But I like to think about it in a hopeful way, with Shinji deciding to bring back the world in the end! Though understanding others is still hard and he's traumatized, as you mentioned ahah
