I tried the recommended difficulty setting a couple of times and I finally opted for the custom settings. Now I'm actually enjoying the game!
The devs are going to adjust the difficulty setting and a few other QOL things to make gameplay a bit better.

It's definitely worth the price. I'd recommend setting up a custom game though bc recommended settings is a bit harsh although the devs are working to improve the difficulty so it's not so stressful.
