I’m thrilled to share that Board of Governors of the UNL Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has appointed me Affiliate Fellow for the 2026-2031 term. I’m very thankful for Melissa Anne Amateis's nomination and excited to serve the Center for the next several years.

Are the issues only because people are “overwhelmed, distracted, or frustrated with the technologies”?

What about the environmental factors? What about data scraping issues? Why don’t you have an environmental historian on the committee?

Excited about next week’s talk at the Galesburg (IL) Public Library, almost 80 years to the date of my grandpa sustaining wounds on Okinawa (May 16, 1945).

80 years ago, my Grandpa + his fellow Marines in Co. L of the 22nd Marines/6th Marine Division landed on Okinawa for the last major battle of WW2. Willard Legg survived a month + a half on Okinawa, sustaining wounds on May 16 fighting up Sugar Loaf Hill.

On this day in 1865, the U.S. Army executed Bdewákhaŋthuŋwaŋ Dakȟóta leaders Śakpe (Little Six) and Wakháŋ Ožáŋžaŋ (Medicine Bottle) at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Here's a quick thread that narrates their story in the immediate aftermath of the U.S.-Dakȟóta War of 1862.

In my Civil War course, I asked students to review Giesberg's _Sex and the Civil War._ After this past week, it was powerful for them to reflect on morality and 19th century access to contraception and abortion. Their connections to today's politics have been impressive.

Some professional news! This Fall, I’m teaching the online American Civil War course at Minnesota State Mankato, Mankato.

While I’m only slated to teach 1 course, I’ll use the free time to make progress on my book proposal, prep job materials, + finish revising an article.

Yesterday I graduated from George Mason University with my PhD in History. What a journey it has been over the last few years. It was nice to travel to campus and celebrate with my advisor, other faculty, and my family! But dang, I forgot how busy the NoVA/DC area is at all times of the day!

Great news, all. This morning I successfully defended my dissertation and passed with no revisions! What a great journey it's been and I can't wait to see what comes next. Until then, I am going to celebrate and enjoy the moment.

I found this postcard of a monument to Sitting Bull in SD. The monument happens to be surrounded not only by a fence, but barbed wire. This is the only evidence of the fence as it has since been removed. I'm sure those who raised the monument and fence quickly realized how of bad of an idea this was

I can’t wait for our roundtable this Saturday between 1:30pm and 3pm at the #WHA2023 conference. Come out and engage in a conversation that seeks to center voices, perspectives, events, and regions often obfuscated in the history and memory of the Civil War era.
