The damage a trap does is inversely proportional to how hard it is to spot and avoid. The more damage, the easier to spot.
Pit trap. Hard to spot. Deals minor damage.
Big gem held in the mouth of a (trapped) statue surrounded by skeletons reaching for it. Easy to spot. Big damage.
