With stable housing secured, Patrick was able to rebuild. Today, he leads a community ministry and offers hope to others on the path to recovery.

That’s when Legal Services stepped in. Our team provided critical legal support, successfully negotiated additional time to find housing, vacated the eviction judgment, and ultimately got the case dismissed.

That includes supporting veterans like Patrick, a Marine Corps veteran in his early 50s, who was facing eviction for nonpayment of rent. With no stable housing and time running out, Patrick filed an emergency motion that briefly delayed the eviction—but he needed more help.

Thanks to Legal Services, Maria can remain safely in her home — without fear of losing it.

This is why #LSCMatters — because protecting someone’s home means protecting their security, dignity, and peace of mind.

We filed a civil complaint to quiet title and, working closely with the State Attorney’s investigator, gathered the evidence needed to undo the fraudulent transfer. The aide ultimately agreed to rescind the deed, and title to the home was restored to Maria.

When Maria’s son discovered the fraud, he contacted the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, which launched a criminal investigation and referred Maria to Legal Services.

That includes protecting people like Maria, an 88-year-old widow with serious health issues who relies on a home health aide for daily care. In the summer of 2023, that aide exploited her trust and tricked her into signing over the title to her home.

Every $1 invested in disaster legal aid brings at least $5 in benefits.
