Bagram Airfield — later known as Bagram Airforce Base — was originally built by the Soviet Union in the 1950s during the early Cold War.
It started as a modern airfield project for Afghanistan’s monarchy but became a major Soviet military hub after the USSR invaded Afghanistan in 1979.
