The sad truth is he couldn't even keep the fiction alive that it will help workers.

I agree with this, except the sliding part. It is here. The courts can't hold the President in contempt. They can't seize the government's assets. The gentlemens' agreement which is the rule of law is now dead. America is now a fascist state. It is up to us to get it back.

Hmm... Can we build robots to give the trash robots batteries? Like a bucket brigade of robots feeding robots feeding robots? Train onboard AI to exchange trash quotas for battery life in a sort of coalmine, dystopic drudgery?

The suggestion of robots is because of the dead zone on Everest. You eventually get to a point where the air is too thin for humans so they discard everything rather than waste what might be their last breath carrying it down (including the dead). Even building a chute would risk people's lives.
