However, as Isaac points out, gentrification is a necessary condition for such phenomenon. As many as four old-school pubs I used to go to in Bristol - in predominantly deprived or non-student areas - closed in less than a year, while I lived there.

Such a great piece, indeed. I certainly felt identified with his hypothesis about why some young people love the "novelty of the old" characteristic of old-school boozers. I remember the Marquis of Granby, in front of Goldsmiths, also as one of those traditional pubs, loved by some students.
