Non-tenure-track instructor teaching statistics and decision analysis. ABD, hoping to finish my PhD in Accounting by May 2025.
This semester my students used generative AI extensively to complete homework. The results:

Fall 2023: GPA 3.06, 13.3% F, D, D+ or W
Fall 2024: GPA 2.19, 24.2% F, D, D+ or W

It's not a shortcut to learning if you don't learn anything.

The policy allows faculty to prohibit the use of Grammarly. It isn't a requirement. I think it is important that we teach students to responsibly use AI while honoring assurance of learning requirements. I hope to see more ideas on addressing both needs.

I share some of the blame for not promoting the content's importance to students' futures. Fortunately, my chair sees it as a student issue and will support the grades.

My experience this semester: students began using AI extensively after my first exam to save time. Student engagement plummeted, which triggered me to review the LMS stats, identify the problem, and block AI use on exams. Now 50% are failing.
