TIL Frederick Douglass and Herman Melville were in New Bedford at the same time

There may have been. Douglass walked apart. It is intriguing to speculate about the degree to which others took Douglass into account, while he took in all that was around him in New Bedford. His walks through New Bedford's few streets and onto its wharves, crowded along the short waterfront, were taken in the quiet of a world instructively set apart from the noise of slavery. There are no descriptions of chance encounters. It is intriguing to imagine the meeting that could so easily have taken place 1 with that other prowler of New Bedford, Herman Melville. The novelist came to know the streets and wharves that he evoked so splendidly in the opening passages of Moby-Dick in the same months that Douglass was walking them daily. In 1841, the year Douglass was to make a short, fateful voyage to Nantucket, Melville crossed the narrow New Bedford harbor to Fairhaven and signed aboard the ship Acushnet for four years. It is pure conjecture, but not implausible, to imagine two of the nineteenth century's most striking men catching sight of each other one clear day in New Bedford.

Finally got around to this - the art is gorgeous and the premise (basically 'True Grit' in space with Supergirl) is inspired. However, it does feel a bit padded in the middle and sometimes the heaping of suffering on Supergirl is a bit much. It'll be interesting to see what the movie does with it.

I picked up Sarah Coakley's study of Ernst Troeltsch's Christology more or less on a whim but it was really interesting! Any Troeltsch-knowers (@schleiermocker.bsky.social? @kyletrow.bsky.social?) familiar with it?
