Enjoying 'Death by Lightning' on Netters. Michael Shannon at his most restrained. Matthew Macfadyen as his most unhinged. Bradley Whitford snarks like no-one's business while Nick Offerman chews the scenery. Shines a spotlight on the corruption and violence of that previous gilded age. Recommended.

Okay, I'm biased because my wife is translating the comic for Titan Books, but 'Sanda' (boy turns into Santa Claus in a Japan in the midst of demographic collapse) is the wildest, horniest, most messed-up show of the season. Studio Science Saru are knocking it out the park.

The last few days I've been bingeing episodes of 'Sutherland's Law', a middlebrow '70s BBC Scotland drama about a highland procurator fiscal who solves crimes. With the excellent Iain Cuthbertson, supported by Gareth Thomas, it's just solid throughout and stands up 50 years on.

Added to the list of Japanese tourist anime, is 'Touring After the Apocalypse', in which teens Youko and Airi ride a motorcycle across a deserted Japan that's gradually returning to nature. It's surprisingly cheery and upbeat, with a world that's verdant, bright, and only occasionally melancholic.

Tokyo musician Alexi loves metal music like life itself. So when he dies and is reincarnated in a world of dragons, demons and zombies, it's like he's come home!
Kasuga Ryo's 'Isekai Metaller', co-translated by my missus, is not only a great concept for an isekai, but is silly in all the best ways.

The Japanese didn't 'do the opposite'. Rather, there are competing victim/perpetrator narratives. The schoolbooks issue is complex and nuanced, and one of the best sources on it is Akiko Hashimoto's 'The Long Defeat'.

As someone eternally fascinated by the French Air Force in WW2 (I made a whole module of my 'Wing Leader' game about it) I discovered yet another book to add to my library!

Sad to hear that the great old thesp Ken Colley has passed. I'm sure a lot of folks will mention his iconic roles in Star Wars, or in Life of Brian, but here's a pic of him playing Nelson instead.

Reading the Representation of the People Act of 1918, I discovered that conscientious objectors were disqualified from voting for the duration of the war and 5 years afterwards. Also that men as young as 19 could vote if they'd served. 'One Gun One Vote' seems to have been a powerful slogan.
