It is all being done as "theater" -- just to make it look like they are doing something (and to distract from other cruelties such as deportations). When in fact all they are accomplishing is causing massive pain for all those millions of recipients of the USA's doing good in the world. 3/

The total payroll for the entire US Gov't is just 5% of federal spending, so laying off some small portion of them just does not make an appreciable financial difference. 2/

The most aggravating thing about all the Trump/Musk layoffs and contract terminations (e.g. USAID) is that they are not actually saving any money, and it is costing a ton of pain and even costing lives. 1/
