This is heartbreaking. It is one of the reasons I am so invested in helping prepare texts for preservation on Project Gutenberg ... the idea of having a repository of our shared ideals and history ... with a view toward educating & rebuilding.

I suspect that it's partly that many aren't following the news, but also don't have enough history or civics to recognize corruption when they see it. How many median voters even know what the Hatch Act is?

A lot has been made of his dementia, & that's important. But I also think he has Oppositional Defiance Disorder, of which little is said, but which could go a long way to explaining his scorched-earth behavior and how rational persuasion doesn't work with him.
