Today's finished object: 18th century panniers. Came across the cane strips in the closet where I had forgotten them, so perhaps I need to make more. 🪡

A big metal bowl full of pasty white dough and a baguette pan with four separate lumps of dough in one trough. The pan has been greased and dusted with cornmeal. Gluten free breads, especially old recipes like this, are generally batter breads with no kneading necessary or even possible. To make the baguette shape, I drop spoonsful of dough into the pan, then spread them out until they meet. Recipe: Rapid Rise French Bread from More from the Gluten Free Gourmet by Bette Hagman.

A hat called a "tire" from the 15th century. It has projections like rounded, blunt horns extending upwards on either side of the face. The fabric is silver satin with pink flowers and green stems woven into it, and a white veil is draped over the horns and pinned between them. Catching up with projects. A Victorian morning wrapper for wearing before donning your corset; three pairs of Elizabethan wrist ruffs, starched and hung to dry; and some edges being dagged for a medieval hood.🪡
A loose dress for a Victorian or Edwardian woman to wear when the formality of corseted styles was not required. A printed cotton fabric on a brown or olive background, the outer dress is gently belted, with loose pleats at the neck. Under that is a buttoned lining that is more fitted. EowynsCloset on Etsy. Six wristbands, each with a one inch ruffle, hang on a drying rack over a fan. They have been sewn, washed, and starched and will dry until crisp. They will later be dampened and ironed into the familiar figure 8s of Elizabethan ruffs, to be worn at the wrist. EowynsCloset on Etsy Bright red wool fabric has been cut along one edge into petal shapes, a medieval dagged edge for a hood.

As I prepared to soak this guy in hot water to melt out the last honey, I wished yet again for some of my old lab equipment. A heating stir plate and stir bar, that straight-sided glass dish, and a lead donut, specifically. Okay, maybe not the stir bar.

That silk ruffle has found a home on a partlet. Maybe now that I've made something out of this fabric my brain will quiet down about it.
A partlet made of silk organza with stripes of more opaque weave edged with thin gold thread. A partlet is a fill-in garment for a neckline, that can go under an Elizabethan kirtle or gown. It ties around the waist and at the neck.

Ready! Dollar store toys instead of candy. Mandarins, ramen, and potatoes for whimsy. Glow stick bracelets to be added after dark. All has proven popular in previous years. I don't bother to supervise. No leftovers to tempt me (except potatoes and fruit).

Oh, all right, one more felted Tudor hat, and then we're switching from knitting to bobbin lace for a while.🧶
Round blue knitted hat before felting, shown brim side up. A yardstick shows its diameter at about 15 inches. The V-shaped stitches are clearly visible. Round blue hat after wet felting by hand. The yardstick now shows a diameter of about 12 inches, and the felting has blurred the individual stitches as the wool fibers bind together and shrink.

Tudor gable hoods, finished and in the shop, EowynsCloset on Etsy. Now on to something else.🪡
Tudor gable hoods on display head forms. Each is shaped a bit like a birdhouse. One is covered in black linen, the other in white. The frames around the faces are decorated with faux jewels, and striped gold ribbon crosses over the forehead. Each has a decorative cloth lappet draped over the top with the ends brought back up to be fastened on top. A black velvet box on the back is unseen, from which hang two narrow black veils.

Elizabethan gable hood nearly done.🪡
The front of a 16th century gable hood, or English hood. It is shaped rather like a birdhouse with no bottom. It is covered in black linen, lined in white linen, over a framework of buckram with wired edges and padding. At the front is a frame with multiple faux jewels, which is partially stitched in place. Striped gold ribbons cross over the forehead region. Side view of the hood, face end at left. At right you can see the black velvet covered box that adorns the back, and two silky black veils descending from it.

The magic of felting. Knitted wool + hot water + cold water + hot water + cold water + hot water + cold water + lots of rubbing and squeezing and agitation = Tudor caps🧶

The brown hat is brim side up, the red hat is brim side down. Individual stitches are barely visible as the wool fibers have tangled and matted together, shrinking and thickening the knitted fabric.

Freshly baked gluten free bread. Most of it will become crumbs, but tonight I get to enjoy a slice of bread with my homemade borscht, a simple but rare pleasure.
Two loaves of homemade gluten free bread on a cooling rack. "Four flour bread" from The Gluten Free Gourmet by Bette Hagman, with modifications. It's not great bread for slicing, it goes stale immediately, but it crumbles easily to make crumbs for breading cutlets or adding to meatballs. Crumble, air dry somewhat, bake at 250F until all moisture has fled. Grind smaller in a food processor, store at room temperature. Or cube and dry out the same way for croutons.

Making Russian cabbage borscht from the Moosewood cookbook. The cube of frozen beets (is that a beetbox?) is certainly a look.
A pot of vegetables including chopped onions, carrots, celery, cabbage, caraway seeds, and a still frozen cube of cooked red beets. To be added: cooked potatoes, tomato puree, honey, cider vinegar, and dill. Eat with a blob of sour cream.
