I remember filming the very last shot and, upon hearing an abnormal and loud CLUNK come from the camera during the last 5 seconds of the shot, thinking to myself, “Welp there goes the entire reel and every single thing we worked so hard to film.” Thankfully, everything came out just fine.

This was co-written with James Feagin and Elizabeth James, each of us designing one or two scene concepts to be shot for the project. We used only one reel of expired 16mm film, filming one single take for each scene in order, and deciding to ‘edit in camera’ with the film being exactly what we got.

‘Motion Pictures for Wall Frames: Vol 1’ is the first in a series of experimental films by filmmaker Lee Eubanks. The series is focused on infusing environments of motion and time inherent in cinema with traditional visual art themes. ‘Volume 1’ involves six scenes which each showcase a genre.

Two person cast and crew, done quick and dirty (numerous days and nights of unending blood, sweat, and tears). It felt nice to finally force those bones to start moving again, feeling them bend until they break just like they always do.

Simultaneously, my musician friend Reed told me he had started working on a new EP with his band. I wondered, “What would it look like if I tried to make a cinematic EP of my own?” After writing and filming additional scenes, it all ended up taking shape into this short film anthology.

After I received the developed film back and started playing around with the edit, I realized there was an interesting relationship starting to form between all of the unrelated shots I had filmed.

It had been awhile since I had filmed anything with serious intent, and I kept finding excuses to procrastinate and delay. This originally started as yet another simple gear test, another easy reason to throw some expired film through my 16mm camera.

The acting is the best I’ve had the privilege of filming thus far. The monologues from Nowell and James are captivating. Elizabeth James gives a bravura performance, portraying 6 separate characters in the film. Stillend would be nothing without the total dedication of the entire cast and crew.

I worked with Dr. DeAngelis to arrange the outline of the film in a philosophical essay/argument format as a starting point. The majority of the onscreen dialogue scenes were written collaboratively with the actors. These numerous brainstorming sessions are some of my favorite memories with the film

Self flagellation. Proof of masochism. This is the most difficult film I’ve made so far (in numerous ways), taking over 5 years to complete. My statement in the press kit for the film still holds up, so I’ll let that continue to do most of the work, but also share a few quick (and pleasant) thoughts
