Specifically for me, I try to keep in mind how the width to the cylinders come from the bony ball ends of each finger segment, and taper back in during the middles.

At least, all of this is how I try to sharpen hands and make them more angular.

I tried doing hot dogs in red. I think cylinders make sense as simple volumes for fingers, but if you want your hands sharper, it might help to imagine each joint as its own cylinder.

I approach hands like this:

First, I usually have at least a couple of models on-hand, and I can usually get them about into the pose/perspective I want. Normally, I just take a picture and sketch, but I traced my hand to try to show the simpler forms I break them into. Palm, fingers, and thumb.

Congratulations! If you haven't, give Lost Odyssey or Jack Move a shot. I think they both do great interpretations of FFX's CTB system.

I get that! That's super frustrating. For me, I get caught up focusing on the wrong things and rendering too hard when a much simpler form would do the trick.

Rough thumbnail sketches help, and I've been doing 30 second gesture drawings to try to get figures to read with less detail.

Take your time! Having thirteen drafts is a lot to be proud of. Anything specific catching you up, or is it more like the yips?

If it's monotonous like dishes, I do audiobooks. If I need to read or listen or talk, I do lofi hip hop.

And if it's something daunting, I split it in half. Cleaning the whole bedroom is impossible? How much do I need to do to get halfway there? After that, it can't be worse than it already was.

With art, your eyes and your hands get better at different rates. You're in a dip where you're better at identifying what you want than your hands are at delivering it.

That doesn't make you a loser. It's the opposite! You're experiencing growth, and these are growing pains.
