Henry has been mostly still since they arrived, silently taking it all in as he stands with his arms crossed and coat still on, but when he finally speaks it’s with a detached sound in his voice. “This is obviously a great deal of information to take in and, um,” Henry hesitates for a moment. “I apologize, what was your name again?” Alex sees something flicker across his sister’s expression, surprise with a hint of hurt, but she answers, “June.” “June,” he repeats. “I am in no way trying to accuse anyone of dishonesty, particularly not anyone I’ve just met, but you can understand how this can all be quite hard to believe without any proof.”

It’s happened before, moments like this—the parking lot where Liam came out to him the night before high school graduation, seeing the pink-purple-blue flag on Nora’s wall the first night they hooked up, eating dinner in the fire station as a probie and hearing Amy talk about her wife. Moments when Alex has had the urge to say, hey, me too? I think, maybe, me too? But he has let each one of them pass by. Mostly because it's stupid, because he’s straight, because it’s just Alex’s brain trying to make everything—even other people’s sexuality—all about him. It would probably be embarrassing, if he actually let himself think about it for too long. Sadness settles over Alex when he realizes that this moment will sit besides those others on that shelf in his mind. He peers over the top of his book to put it all to memory—the soft clamor of the activity in the cafe, the smell of coffee and tea mingling in the air, the way the light slanting in from the window catches in Henry’s hair.

In the sci-fi smash-hit movie Binary Light, Dev Creehil (played by Alex Claremont-Diaz) and Qindeli (played by Henry Fox) go from enemies to reluctant allies to friends. While a legion of on-line fans believe that arc should have included a ‘to lovers’ at the end, the behind the scenes truth is that the lead actors stayed firmly enemies to enemies throughout filming. Fresh off a brutal breakup, Alex is back for the sequel and back to dealing with Henry—the asshole Hollywood nepo baby who has failed to conceal his disdain for Alex ever since their first chemistry read.
