cloudflare et al are already the only reason the web is still usable in the face of DDoS; now they're going to be load bearing for protecting against the hordes of AI scrapers.

it feels like it would be more effective to try and tackle this closer to the source though I don't quite see how
The Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, says its bandwidth costs have gone up 50% since Jan 2024 — a rise they attribute to AI crawlers.
