I can't say I have it down to a science. I write how it comes to me, let it sit for a bit, and read it. If I start skipping sentences, then I know I need to adjust my approach.

That is a great question. The best answer I have is it is a balancing act, because it is easy to lean into jokes and skip the substance.
I approached it by making the arcs focus on events rather than growth for the main character, who is 70, while the "sidekick" went through more subtle growth arcs

For my completed Novella, fantasy/comedy with a touch of satire. I will probably continue to write in the fantasy genre, to some capacity, in my next story.
