The Toronto Population Network had its very first mini-conference at Hart House last Thursday, and it was such an amazing event!! Thanks everyone for coming & can't wait for what's next 💙

P.S. trying to get the "confidence intervals overlapping" photo pose trending. it clearly has potential, eh?

A key explanation is SES. This is easy to miss: US-born Asians have high average income. However, an increased share are now in the bottom of the income distribution.

This is consistent with the known trend that AAs experienced the highest increase in income inequality of any group since 1980.

My new-to-blusky friend Nicole Kreisberg @nicolekreisberg.bsky.social is looking for interviewees for her project on immigrant couples! Her research team is in particular need of more respondents from Latin America and/or on student visas. Please share widely! #Socsky

Jet lagged + woke up early to read election news, so did the unusual thing (for me lol) of taking a morning walk - cherry blossoms are in bloom! Good morning #Toronto 🌸

Made my own #severance elevator this weekend. Quite proud of this one! :3

It appears that the Eastern Sociological Association #ESS meeting is happening at the same hotel as the American Psychopathological Association meeting.

Since other people do it to sociologists all the time, is it offensive to ask "can you read my thoughts" to psychopathologists in the elevator? 👀

Thanks @jean23bean.bsky.social for visiting us at Toronto Sociology this week to speak about suspect citizenship! The room was completely full and we had to even add a couple of chairs to accomodate all the interest in hearing about this important work. Excited to follow this project!!

Not that I'd like to humor the idea, but in case you are curious, here's what people in 🇨🇦 actually think of becoming the 51st state:
An overwhelming majority (82%) said no, they don't want it. Women & those aged 55+ are especially against it.

I had a great time visiting Penn State PRI yesterday! Presented a paper on immigrants' earnings trajectories and later-life health and got amazing questions from the audience 😊 A special thank-you goes to @appdemography.bsky.social for showing me around!

POLL: I live in Toronto, and I'm going to the store later today to get a ZZ plant. What should I say to the person in the store?
A) I want a Zee Zee plant
B) I want a Zed Zed plant
C) Write "zz plant" on a piece of paper and slide it over in silence

(I guess there's no poll function yet? 🤣)
