Silver Linings. As I read your letter, your handwriting disappears into the silver lining of the thunderclouds that darken the room so suddenly. I couldn't see to read by then but rather sat and remembered how you would hold me while it stormed. The raindrops, periods and commas to things we never had to say because we could feel the words flow through the water and blood in our veins. L.n.chandler

My Love, Hold On

My love, hold on. The moon is in her skin, the sun is in her hair. The stars align like freckles, constellations everywhere. The grass beneath her feet keep her grounded through the day. And the wind keeps her moving when she only wants to stay. The mountains she keeps climbing only get higher each new dawn, and rivers only rush below when she chances to look down. She is built from the world and this world is built from her. Her poems flow likely waterfalls from pen to basin down below. And music trips from fingertips into hollow, empty halls. Yet pain is a desert trying to spread, with a thorn garden in her bones. But love is the patient gardener, with watering can and shears, that wanders every overgrown path to make it a little easier to bear. L.n.chandler

Silvicultrix. Adj. Living in the forest. I pace the trail my own two feet have carved through the underbrush. From my home to my garden to my river. A path I take multiple times a day. Step step step. I need not pay attention. My body knows its own was. Moss edges in where grass once grew. Leaves in varying stages of decay decorate the ground. Mushrooms grow like trees of micro forests. Tree roots weave tapestries beneath my boots. Step step step. The air smells of damp earth. It's never truly dry here beneath the canopy. Dappled light caresses my face and I close my eyes for a few moments. The tumble of water is not far off now. It has worn smooth the rocks lining its bed. I need to stay here a little while longer before it smooths my rough edges too. Maybe if I stay here forever, one day I'll be polished like a carnelian. Maybe if I stay in this forest, grow my roots here, spend my seasons here, my winter won't feel so hard. L.n.chandler

The Muse. I filled my bag with broken bits of colored glass, with gathered dust and rhymes. I filled it with river rocks, dead batteries, and Spanish lullabies. Lily of the Valley. I slumber sweetly beneath the snow, waiting patiently to feel the earth warm with spring. And when it does, I stretch slowly upward. Then, fickle spring runs cold again. I keep curled close and wait for another warm day. Sometimes, it feels like that will never come. Then, suddenly, a dawn brings warm wind to dance around my arms. I unfurl them slowly and turn my face to the sun; bathing in her beautiful yellow light. Bleeding Hearts You cannot kill me- no matter how many times you slice me in two, four, sixteen, sharing me with your friends, I will always rise again, better, bigger, brighter. I will burst from the ground as delicate as lace and wear my hearts on my sleeves like badges. And though they weep red and pulse with each beat, you cannot kill me. I cannot die.

Excision: Surgery; the surgical removal of a foreign body or of tissue. 1. They laid me out and held me down and cut out the piece of you that you left behind. I knew that bit of you was poison to me but I fought to keep it all the same. We all die someday. I just wanted to die a bit sooner. 2. I had decided I needed no one and with sterile hands and a rusty scalpel, cut out my heart and buried it in the garden. Aconite grew from it and many a curse was made with its flowers. l.n.chandler

Cherry Blossoms

Cherry Blossoms Summer rages through the winter corridor shouldering spring aside. I awoke early; when cold winds still caressed my skin. I unfurled thousands of pink blossoms. Watching them turn their faces to the sky. Praising the goddess. Casting blessings through icy mornings. Then heat rushed by suddenly and decided to stay. Warm days and cool nights a myth told by mothers to their daughters. Unbelievable in our age as my pink flowers fade to white. Fade, fade... until they fall away.
