I heard today that the great American photographer and teacher Philip Perkis died last week. I’ve always liked his work. (1935 – 2025)

I looked at this painting for sometime. The colours were splendid. Her right hand looks puffy. Here’s what The Wallace Collection had to say about the painting: A pupil of Gerard ter Borch, Netscher specialised in small-scale genre scenes in the manner of his teacher. Later in his career, from c.1667, he focused instead on portraits of patrician subjects. Netscher’s undisputed masterpiece, The Lace Maker, is one of the most successful representations of idealised female virtue in Dutch art. In the seventeenth century, women were frequently depicted as dangerous creatures, prone to vice if left to their own devices. Contemporary moralists recommended marriage and housewifery as the only fit occupations for women. Within the home, one of the housewife’s principal duties was to maintain its order and cleanliness, implied in this picture by the broom propped against the wall on the left. The girl’s modest woollen dress implies her lack of vanity, while her absorption in the delicate and difficult task of lace-making underlines her seriousness and moral rectitude. Such an image of the demure housewife, prudent and chaste, had wider implications too, since the home and its correct organisation were considered of supreme importance in determining the moral fate of Dutch society as a whole.

The library is a Grade II listed Neoclassical building with some art deco fittings. It is the home of hundreds of thousands of rare books, manuscripts, archives and art including the Brontë manuscripts and Bradford and Keighley mill records.

Joan Didion The White Album (1979) “This is a list which was taped inside my closet door in Hollywood during those years when I was reporting more or less steadily. The list enabled me to pack, without thinking, for any piece I was likely to do. Notice the deliberate anonymity of costume: in a skirt, a leotard, and stockings, I could pass on either side of the culture. Notice the mohair throw for trunk-line flights (i.e., no blankets) and for the motel room in which the air conditioning could not be turned off. Notice the bourbon for the same motel room. Notice the typewriter for the airport, coming home: the idea was to turn in the Hertz car, check in, find an empty bench, and start typing the day's notes. It should be clear that this was a list made by someone who prized control, yearned after momentum, someone determined to play her role as if she had the script, heard her cues, knew the narrative. There is on this list one significant omission, one article I needed and never had: a watch.” I needed a watch not during the day, when I could turn on the car radio or ask some-one, but at night, in the motel. Quite often I would ask the desk for the time every half hour or so, until finally, embarrassed to ask again, I would call Los Angeles and ask my husband. In other words I had skirts, jerseys, leotards, pullover sweater, shoes, stockings, bra, night-gown, robe, slippers, cigarettes, bourbon, shampoo, toothbrush and paste, Basis soap, razor, deodorant, as-pirin, prescriptions, Tampax, face cream, powder, baby oil, mohair throw, typewriter, legal pads, pens, files and a house key, but I didn't know what time it was. This may be a parable, either of my life as a reporter during this period or of the period itself.

I see Oliver Reed.
Ferdinand Bol joined Rembrandt’s workshop in Amsterdam in 1637, and probably remained there until he set up as an independent painter around 1642. The Toper (a drinker or drunkard) is shown in the costume of an early sixteenth-century knight wearing a gold medallion of Saint George. In the nineteenth century the picture was thought to be by another follower of Rembrandt, Jan Victors, and to depict the imprisoned Arnold, Duke of Guelders (1423–1473). The intensity of the facial characterisation has led some to speculate that the picture is a self-portrait, although the picture does not resemble Bol’s known Self-Portrait (1653; private collection). The Toper is in fact a typical character-piece, or tronie, in the Rembrandt manner and may be compared with other half-length figures leaning from windows by Rembrandt and Bol. Bol used this type of pose for an elaborate series between 1644 and 1653, and the present picture is generally thought to date from this period, c. 1650–1.
