I have expressed thoughts on Moby Dick in the past, you really should read it. At worst you'll learn how hardcore the whaling industry was.
So l've mentioned a few times that I'm reading Moby Dick, and it has been a bit of a slog. Because while Herman Melville makes it clear early on that Ahab is a Problem and quite insane, the Captain mostly contents himself with grumbling in his quarters while Ishmael goes on for a hundred and ten chapters about the whaling industry. Then the Pequod approaches Japan, and the spirit of Anime enters into Ahab. He goes to his blacksmith and demands a harpoon. "Made of what," says the blacksmith. "Here are the horseshoe nails of a dozen dead horses." "Why that's some of the strongest iron around!" "Damn right," says Ahab. "And here are twenty straight razors I wore out shaving, use these to give the harpoon badass spikes." "You're mad," says the blacksmith. "Mad like a fox," says Ahab, "just watch this. Hey you three harpooners! Come here and bleed into this crucible, we're going to temper my harpoon in our blood!" And they do it. A few chapters later the ship's caught in a typhoon. Ahab refuses to raise lightning rods and his new harpoon gets struck by ball lightning. Ahab just grabs it, tells the crew God can go fuck himself in so many words, and blows out the fire. So now the captain is carrying around this cursed weapon, and his rower swears Ahab can't die until he sees two hearses, one on water. All the magnets on the ship have turned backwards and the lead harpooner is sleeping in his own coffin. I'm nine chapters short of the end and shit is getting real.
