So, what did we find? In short, waiting for a nursing home bed is associated with a 40% increase in hospital length of stay. As this also leads to cost increases, this has significant implications for public policy and patient care.

Many reports suggest that elderly people stay longer in hospitals because they can't find a nursing home place. Together with my coauthors, Dörte Heger and Christiane Wuckel, we provide evidence that this issue is present in Germany.
