‘Ceremony’ by Leslie Marmon Silko. One of the last books I read for class before quitting uni, and it’s stayed with me ever since. Heartbreaking and very real in its depiction of PTSD, but also very moving in its depiction of literally everything else. Silko is awesome!
A blue paperback book. The title is written in large, lighter blue letters that spell “Ceremony”. directly below, Leslie Marmon Silko is listed as the author. A faded photo of a feather graces the center of the cover. The very bottom of the book says “Introduction by Larry McMurtry”. A blurb from the inside jacket of the book which reads as follows: “Set in the insular world of the Laguna Pueblo Reservation but resonating far beyond, Leslie Marmon Silko’s novel tells the story of Tayo, an army veteran of mixed ancestry who returns to the reservation, scarred by his experience as a prisoner of the Japanese. Only by immersing himself in the Indigenous past and its traditions can he begin to regain the peace that was taken from him. Masterfully written, filled with the somber majesty of Pueblo myth, Ceremony is a work of enduring power. This thirtieth anniversary edition contains a new preface by the author and an introduction by Larry McMurtry.” It should be noted that the blurb does not use the word “indigenous” to describe Tayo’s past and traditions. Instead there is another word that begins with “i” that I’m sure other people would be more comfortable typing out (given that the word is often used as a slur and I am not Native American).
