Plot twist: Instead of dodging the draft for the invasion of Iran by fleeing to Canada, you'll have to flee to Iran to dodge the draft for the invasion of Canada.

Day 21

Played the new Age of Steam map NYC & Erie from Traxx the other day. Pretty good! I didn't know boats were the gimmick missing from AoS, but it was an excellent map. Forgot to take a pic, but here's Hiro's pic from BGG. Note "steven door" space

Day 18

Anybody else track the short stories they like? When I'm reading a collection, I'll put a check mark in table of contents by stories I find interesting. If I think it's exceptionally good, it goes on the spreadsheet.

Day 17

I read Barthelme's "The Question Party" today. Different from his usual works. An author's note at the end describes it as an objet trouvé. It's an 1850 short story revised by him with a rewritten ending. "How strange is justice" indeed.

Day 16

Revised the code on the microcontroller project some. I wasn't as done as I thought I was. Now it's done done, or at least more done. At some point I'll dip my toe into 3D printing and make a case for the thing.

Day 15

(Mostly) finished my microcontroller light sensor project today. Just a few touches left, like a case. Hard to tell in the video since the camera tries to balance out the brightness, but it's controlling the screen brightness based off of the ambient light.

Day 14

Anyone else's writing process include a step where you read your draft, hate it, think nobody would want to read it, and decide to never write again?

Following this step is re-reading the draft a few months later and revising, because you did, in fact, write again.

Day 11

Started on a microcontroller project. Hoping to turn this dev board into a light sensor to set the brightness of my monitor. Got the soldering done and wrote the microcontroller code for the serial output. Just need to write the program to adjust the brightness via the output.

Day 10

Finished Best Small Fictions 2023. Took awhile to get through it. I like some good flash fiction, but I found it hard to read very many of them in one sitting.

I also finished an outline for another short story. This one is about a group of family friends and a cabin.

Day 9

Read Nick Story's "Does the Pig?" in Best Small Fictions 2023 today.

1. What a name for an author, right? I wonder if it's a pen name.

2. He's got a website with his works. nick-story.com/fiction/. I've read "Disaster Movie", and I'll have to check out his others when I get a chance.

Day 8

Got got by a certain gamified shopping app. Saw they were "giving away" an attachment I wanted for my trimmer and ended up buying a 30V 5A DC power supply.

Day 7

Another quiet day. Took my state-mandated civics test and looked into small presses that publish flash fiction. I have a few pieces ready to go: one about rats, one about an egg, and another about Vegas.

Also made a tiny bit of progress on a longer draft.

Day 6

Quiet day. Did some laundry and finished Beer's Peace Against War. Says aggregation leads to polarization leads to militarization, and that to combat this nation-states should be weakened in favor of local and international polities. Interesting read. Can't do it justice in a skeet.

Day 5

Made slow-cooker chicken. That's the duality of man: one day you take a selfie with the bird, and the next day you eat it.

Turned out pretty good!

(No, it's not the same bird in both pictures.)

Day 4

Took a day trip up to St Louis and went to the zoo. I hadn't been to a zoo since first grade, so I'd say I was due.

Met up with ECSTL afterwards to do a little networking.

Day 3

Pretty quiet without all the students. Got my FAFSA filled out and did a little reading: Canin's collection Emperor of the Air. Really enjoying it. Each short story is just a little better than the last.

Started another short story draft of my own, but it's slow going.

Day 2

Braved the rainstorm and went out for coffee this morning. I did some writing on my laptop at the coffee shop, a nice change of pace after a semester full of STEM. I started a draft on a story called "Ectene" about a man who gets injured in a warehouse, among other things.

Winter of Logan, Day 1.

I'm an EE major at Missouri S&T. Winter break is here and lasts until MLKJ Day. I live off campus and I'm sticking around.

What's there to do in Rolla once the students leave? Not much, but I'm going to post daily here to keep busy and share what projects and misc I'm up to
