The one time we got a hornet in our apartment Agrippa punched it, got stung on his punching paw, and we ended up having to take his little Hellboy self to the emergency vet on a Sunday night. Where they gave him the most expensive Benadryl ever.

It seems like putting them on a platform would be beneficial, since the cold air should come down to you - it might even make the place feel a little cooler. If you raised it up on like a cheap end table or something you could use the space under it for storage
