“I would hide in the thicket and wait for help to arrive,” Dimitri said. “It is foolish to take on so many enemies by yourself.” Byleth didn’t quite smile in response, but her body relaxed, letting go of the tension it had held while she waited to hear that very answer. “Very good, Dimitri. Always, always, rely on others when you know you need help.” Felix rolled his eyes as Dimitri straightened in his chair, his pleasure at the praise evident. Felix looked at the hint of satisfaction in the professor’s eyes and rolled his eyes harder. He’d warned her, but she wouldn’t listen. There was nothing he could do if she insisted on trying to tame the boar. “I am sure Annette would have answered correctly if she had truly taken the lessons you have taught us to heart,” Dimitri said, his pleasant smile at odds with his words. Felix glared at Dimitri’s back, letting out a huff of disbelief. Unbelievable. He couldn’t fathom how the boar had the gall to lecture anyone about not rushing ahead into battle, given he constantly did so on their missions. He’d have done exactly the same as Annette had described, worse probably given that strategy wouldn’t even cross his mind in the rush to quench his bloodlust. Felix saw Annette’s posture deflate as she sunk into herself. He opened his mouth to defend her—only because of how dishonest the boar was, lying and hiding his true nature from the others, no other reason than that—but was stopped when Annette spoke first. “It was a trick question!” Her face flamed as she saw everyone staring at her. “Well, um, actions speak louder than words, right? Out of the two of us, who’s the one who always obeys the professor’s instructions in battle and who’s the one who rushes ahead? Huh? Did you think about that?” Felix hid a smile. Thankfully someone else could recognize that the boar needed to be called out on the stench of hypocrisy that hung around him.

“Come on.” Felix pried her hand loose and took it in his own, dragging her behind him as they left the bar. Annette looked up at the street lights illuminating the pavement, marvelling at the pretty colours swirling at the edges of her vision, losing her balance momentarily before Felix righted her. Maybe she’d drunk a bit more than she’d thought. “Wait. Where are the others?” she asked, noticing for the first time that they weren’t anywhere that she could see. Felix didn’t answer as he moved ahead of her again, the optical illusion of how broad his back was when the rest of his body was so slim, fascinating Annette to the point where she almost forgot what had so puzzled her before. And why were the tips of his ears red? They were only red when he was embarrassed. He never turned red when he was drunk, unlike her. And his grip was a little bit sweaty, which meant he was also nervous. But why would Felix be nervous? She should ask Sylvain, he’d know. Wait. Where was Sylvain? “Felix?” Annette asked again. “Are we going to the next bar?” Felix stopped so suddenly that Annette ran into his back with a soft exhale as she made contact. “Sorry,” he muttered. “I, uh, wanted to show you something.” He turned around, not meeting her eyes and shrugging his shoulders. “You seem upset and I thought now is as good a time as any.” Annette tried to hide a smile, but she felt so warm and fuzzy that she suspected her facial muscles weren’t obeying her. “As good a time as any? You really know how to charm a girl,” she teased.

Phoenix strode towards the training grounds, as he always did at this hour. The sun, just rising over the horizon, bathed his visage in an amber glow which matched the colour of his feline eyes. He had no purpose except gaining strength, no eyes for anything other than his feet as they stepped one in front of the other briskly along the path. His single minded focus blinded him so that he had no knowledge of the person watching him from the shadows, her eyes taking in every ripple of his muscles, every movement of his thigh-high boots caressing his muscular calves just as she wished she could. Felix grimaced in distaste. “Why is she writing about me and calling me Phoenix?” he asked. “Oh good, you understood it,” Sylvain said. “Did you think I wouldn’t? Any simpleton could understand this. Felix, Phoenix, training, mentioning my boots, although so lasciviously… They’re practical.” “Sure they are.”

Did you see him and Sylvain yesterday outside the Lions’ classroom? Intricate rituals. Everywhere Annette goes she hears gossip about Felix’s love life. She doesn’t know why, it’s not as if Felix is some great catch, just because he’s rich, and handsome, and will be a Duke one day. So why does it bother her so much that none of the rumours are about her?

Felix woke to the smell of blood and burning flesh. He sat up and looked to the foot of his bed. They were both here today - a burned beyond other people’s recognition face in a suit of armor, and a mess of matted black and gray furs, covered in blood, and distinctly lacking a head. Glenn wheezed as he tried to speak - his vocal chords had burned as well. Dimitri had always heard Glenn’s ghost, Felix didn’t even have that luxury. He vomited into the bucket he kept next to his bed for just this purpose. Felix got up and made his way to Mercedes’ room for a sleeping draught. She wasn’t there - he found Annette instead. “Felix!” She was smiling brightly, just as she had before she had kissed him for the first time. “Were you looking for Mercie? Emile took a nasty hit, so Mercie had to stay with him overnight.” Felix stared, drinking in the sight of her. “...I think I’ve gone mad,” he said, quietly. “I keep seeing Glenn and Dimitri. I think I’m turning into him.” He looked down at his hands, shocked that there wasn’t any of Dimitri’s blood staining them. “No, I’ve become more of a monster than he ever was.” “Felix! Don’t you dare!” He looked up at Annette’s fierce glare. “If anyone’s to blame it was me,” she said. “You would never have killed him if it wasn’t for me, I shouldn’t have been on the frontlines.” She was right. He knew it, but couldn’t accept it. He never would have hacked Dimitri’s head off if he hadn’t hurt Annette first. The door opened. “Felix?” Mercedes asked. “I was after a sleeping draught, if that’s okay.” He dreaded the day when Mercedes would finally deny him for his own good. “Sure.” Mercedes looked exhausted, dark circles around her eyes. “I think I’ll join you.” Of course, it would probably be a long time before she refused to help him - she wasn’t a hypocrite. Felix looked behind her to Annette as he downed the vial, at the bloody gash in her chest where Areadbhar had burst through her heart, and waited to slip off into oblivion.

WIP Wednesday. Working on some Mercigrid for rarepair week 🥰 (Yes, there is background Netteflix, I am what I am 😅).
“Was I too obvious?” Mercedes asked, a smile playing around the edges of her lips. “Only to someone who was looking, and that is not Felix,” Ingrid answered between giggles. “Yes, he and Annie are quite similar in that way, oblivious to the point of incredulity.” Mercedes picked off a tiny piece of sweet bun and chewed on it thoughtfully. Ingrid watched the way her jaw moved intently, the contractions of her cheeks, the quick flash of tongue as Mercedes cleaned up the frosting staining her lips, the bob of her neck as she swallowed, the shape of her lips as her mouth formed words. “You do agree?” “Huh?” Ingrid blinked, a blush spreading over her cheeks. She hadn't heard anything Mercedes had said prior. Mercedes giggled sweetly. “I was saying that their situation is frustrating because it would be so easy for them if they tried. Last week, Felix accompanied Annette on most of her greenhouse shifts—helping he said—and when I suggested to Annie it was because he likes her, she said it was more likely that he’d developed a sudden interest in plants! Felix! The things Annie will talk herself into, just so she doesn’t have to face reality.” Ingrid frowned. While Annette’s thought process could be inscrutable, she didn’t find it that improbable given the situation. What was easier to believe—Felix wanting to do everything he could so that their army would have enough food or Felix being a hopeless romantic? What was easier to believe—Mercedes going out of her way to bake for everyone or Mercedes specifically baking for Ingrid’s enjoyment?

Felix raised an eyebrow. “You obviously do.” Annette clamped her lips together so she wouldn’t reply, her breaths coming quickly through her nostrils. She held herself like that for a few moments before she let out a primal scream. Huh, Felix was right. She did feel a bit better. “I can’t believe you left us! You know what? If you had left to go to Prince Dimitri I would have understood. He’d lost everyone, and he needed you. But you didn’t. You left him alone, too! All for yourself, for your penance, for your needs. But what about us? You think the living don’t hold a candle to the dead. Do you even know how sad and stupid that is? It makes me so mad, I can’t stand it! And I have to pretend it doesn’t, that I won’t remember the years of hurt if you come back, that everything will be like it was before, just so you won’t feel too guilty to return, and then you’re so stubborn that you won’t do it anyway! What more do you want? I’ll do anything for Mother to be happy, but I can’t know what I’m supposed to do if you won’t talk to me! Aaaaaarrggghhh!” Annette felt faint as she finished, finally getting all her feelings out making her feel slightly woozy. Felix caught her before she stumbled, lowering her gently to the floor and sitting down next to her, his hand warm at her back. Annette smiled at him wearily. “Better?” he asked. “Better.”
