i think there just probably isn't a problem. ive been playing the whole series lately and had no problem in either gold or crystal. we'll see soon if hgss is any different.

regardless of us theorising how it's much better it is to beat the game with your team of guys you've been using for tens of hours instead of an overpowered legendary you just met, i doubt anyone thought that kids playing pokemon wouldn't include the guy on the box on their team

*such as not using legendaries that are either forced upon you unskippably in the story or heavily directed towards or easily found by exploring. you're supposed to look around in these games and fight optional trainers. you're supposed to use items in battle. shift battle mode is the default

i always find this discourse somewhat baffling, in my personal experiences ive never had to grind levels in any pokemon game in order to progress (does failing the elite four a few times before winning count as grinding?). but it also seems to come from people playing strangely* as adults
