I'd heavily question the notion that meaningful anti-establishment electoral success is achievable within a highly hierarchical socioeconomic system.

The deck is always stacked in favour of the status quo and vast segments of the population are near totally cut off from the means to challenge power

Certainly not a surprising take from anybody with a definite and secure position within establishment institutions.

Those who hold more than adequate personal and familial wealth are obviously incentivised to discourage any revolutionary tendencies that could threaten their position of privilege

That's a valid point but I believe a FF-FG coalition without the Greens (replaced by Independents, say) would have been far flimsier and led to far less public confidence. This, combined with a more or less united front in opposition, would have hit the establishment parties a lot harder

I agree there's not a strong public appetite currently. I am bemoaning the lost potential for one based on the promising trends in 2020

French NFP is made up of 4 major parties and over 50 parties total across all mainland and oversees territories, plus a few trade unions

20 of these parties hold at least 1 national assembly seat (though about 6 of these are essentially independents by Irish standards)
November 30, 2024 at 9:49 PM
They were saying the same thing in France 12 months ago.

If there is strong public appetite, then I'm optimistic enough to believe that the left-wing/left-leaning parties could align against a deeply unpopular government with an explicit aim of forming a majority government
November 30, 2024 at 9:32 PM
That's fair. There are a lot of a good people working towards crucial goals in the GP.

I just feel their (somewhat ironic) lack of a big picture perspective and ambition has ultimately done more damage than good to both the reputation of environmental policy and belief in meaningful pol change
November 30, 2024 at 9:07 PM
Fully agreed. In a left coalition, Green policy goals could be achieved through high Dáil support for a progressive carbon tax system.

Instead, we got FF-FG defending private business interests and heaping pressure onto CoL crisis thus souring opinion on environmental policy
November 30, 2024 at 8:19 PM
Agreed, but they could at least claim clear distinction from the right (as could centrist Labour). The GP's economic stances definitely call their left credentials into question too
November 30, 2024 at 8:15 PM
Indeed. Nothing that any of us say is necessarily true or sane.
November 30, 2024 at 8:04 PM
The point is that the Greens' splintering of a nascent left alliance in 2020 has killed the potential for a left government in 2024 and beyond.

Their marginal policy gains in government pale in comparison to what could have been achieved in a more aligned progressive coalition
November 30, 2024 at 7:54 PM
I agree that other parties haven't done enough, but the splintering of an incredibly promising left-wing wave in 2020 began with the Green mud guard for FF-FG.

Plus the Greens' time in gov has significantly damaged the support for environmental policy in rural areas due to cost of living

No confirmation on above from officer mind^

Apparently there was a discrepancy spotted in some bundles with possible tallying errors. Discovered quite close to the end of the count which was unfortunate
November 30, 2024 at 7:39 PM
I'm not saying there could have been a left government in 2020. I'm saying the GP contributed hugely to killing the potential for one following #GE24 and beyond
November 30, 2024 at 7:15 PM
Not in 2020. I'm talking about longer-term party dynamics following GE20 (hence "set back party politics by 10 years")
November 30, 2024 at 7:13 PM
Allow FF-FG to go alone or with independents. Continue to absolutely hammer them as they flounder in government. Would have left a much better chance to open the way for a further vote left wave in #GE24
November 30, 2024 at 7:09 PM
The Greens' contribution to cost of living crisis has also massively soured potential support for environmental policy in many rural areas due to totally regressive carbon tax approach #GE24
November 30, 2024 at 7:05 PM
I live abroad due to high cost of living. Couldn't get the time off to travel back to vote
November 30, 2024 at 6:41 PM
Yup. Worth noting that those making these claims are almost unfailingly FG-FF voters or sympathisers

He's not wrong, but that's incredibly rich coming from Ó Ríordáin or anyone in Labour
