Much like the Wang Chung soundtrack this gets into a good groove that's shot to hell whenever anyone who isn't Willem Dafoe or Dean Stockwell start to make noises with their mouth. Friedkin trowels on so much tough(corny) verite(sloppy) intensity(bullshit) that by the end it was literally laughable.

I have been obsessively looking this $600 CDN bad boy up on the Canadian Tire website for the last two days, I think I'm gonna pull the trigger

Feels ghoulish to say a 40-minute movie that's solely vignettes of sectarian executions in Northern Ireland should be more horrific, but verisimilitude built by long Steadicam takes & commonplace locations is undermined by cuts to close-ups of guns firing, lack of dialogue, & bang-I'm-dead acting.

I like your twisted point of view, Mike
I like your questioning eyebrows
You've made it pretty clear what you like
It's only fair to tell you now

That I leave early in the morning
And I won't be back til next year
I see that kiss-me pucker forming
But maybe you should plug it with a beer, cause

... but its use in that context isn't a sign of snobbery. For a bougie, he had extensive interaction w/ the working & poor and did have an appreciation them as for humans, though at times perhaps not free of a certain amount of condescension.

(Sorry, this got a little apologia-y)

A simmering pot of delicious tension, I wondered if there would be anything left - in it and in myself - after it finally boiled over at the end of the second act, but the final 30 minutes did it all over again and left me laughing with relief and release.

Plus more frying pan violence!

Delightful and charming as hell with good music to boot, though I did miss a good chunk and my opinion was surely boosted by the rare pleasure of enjoying a movie with my family. +5 points for fun frying pan violence!

An odd book: very little narrative tension, yet compulsively readable. Inch deep/mile wide. It could be trimmed by 50k words, but I can’t say where; every bit, while not essential, contributes to a satisfying whole. Sprawling but tidy.
In conclusion, Tom Clancy is a land of contrasts.

Better than its predecessor; the first half briskly clips along, but then plot happens at the midpoint & then it's plot, plod, plot, plod.

Started the third b/c I forgot how much I enjoy reading, but I am prepared to jump ship & try picking up The Honorable Schoolboy where I left it six months ago

Finally read and finished a book! Unfortunately, I didn't like it very much for my least favourite\least trusted reason, it didn't seem like it was written very well.

Started the second one to see if I was the problem and am enjoying it much more, so yeah, I think the first was just not good.
