Watching the US right now from afar and this is my exact feeling - on one side, the endless horror of the government, but overflowing admiration for the many regular people out there, each tirelessly fighting in their own ways

Seconding everything Dave said. All the best to you and your mum.

Also that book looks fascinating. I could totally see a linguistic ethnographic study in a barbershop, building on this.

Look into it! 🤗 would love to read your thoughts and discoveries

I found them on instagram! Plot twist: they seem to enjoy travelling to Mexico.

Of course, now I also want to know where you are, what you're up to (and also encourage you to go inside and find out more 😁)

Of course then I was curious about Bablo. The internet suggests it's a Russian/ Slavic version of Paul.. or also potentially this?

Also like that they include both English for vibes, but also German for practical info (men's hairdresser, without appointment).

That would be a great project! Definitely can see some features that suggest global/transnational trends in hipsterish barbershop design (but also agree with @wordkunst.bsky.social re the photos. Have seen similar in Turkish/ Lebanese/ Afghan migrant neighbourhoods in both Sydney and Ghent)

This is great - thanks for sharing!

Yes, the full statement is "colonialism is good (for us)". None of that expertise debunks *that* proposition.

Norway gets the first High Distinction mark for this conclusion to this (too easy) international law legal problem question assignment

Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide: "International law is universal and binding for all states. The American intervention in Venezuela is not in accordance with international law."

I was imagining setting this scenario as a problem question and thinking exactly that. Too straightforward, not enough grey.

And first book of the new year is by another wonderful Australian author, Michelle de Kretser. Can't put this one down.

100% this. Every time I see them I think of this (and can also imagine some kind of Netflix movie with this storyline)
