The Analysis calls for the whole Act to be repealed and a process of consultation to be conducted before any such legislation is again introduced. It also makes a number of more specific recommendations for reform of the Act to bring it into line with international standards.
Between late August and mid-September, the parliament of the #Maldives, or People’s Majlis, rushed into law the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act. CLD has analysed the Act against international human rights standards 👇

CLD has signed onto a joint letter urging withdrawal of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill. The letter notes that the bill "poses a grave threat to press freedom and media independence in the Maldives".
