4/4 The one that stands out to me is that older people acted first. In the US we often say things like, "Good thing you young people are around to fix things." No. We--by which I mean people 35 and older--need to put in the hard labor of repair. Even if we're so, so tired. This is how it gets done.

3/4 Young people gathered next. Women, young and old, came out. At 2:30 in the morning. Something that felt like it might be inevitable--the military had announced that they would uphold martial law--was not. Lots of lessons to learn from this, if we can get over American exceptionalism.

2/4 Korea has an established culture of effective protest. There's a drill, and they know it. Politicians, some of them clearly after a night of carousing, dropped everything to beeline to the National Assembly. They scaled walls to do so. They did not hit the sack first because it was late.
