Time for the family of the day! This time it's Pentatomidae! These little stink bugs are everywhere right now, trying to overwinter in people's homes. I believe these ones are brown marmorated stink bug. Stink bugs have a very distinct shape and a large triangle on their backs! Stinky🤢!

Happy Friday! Let's celebrate with the family of the day: Libellulidae🐉! These dragonflies come in many shapes and sizes, but are pretty easy to ID! Look at the hind wings, and you'll see a little boot shape! As far as I know, all libellulids have this characteristic! Isn't it cool?

Family of the day! This one is super relevant right now, as they're trying to overwinter in your home! Coccinellidae are Lady beetles/ladybugs! I caught these invasive Asian lady beetles trying to come in to the buildings on campus everywhere! But the others are charming, aren't they? 🐞

Insect Family of the week! But this time: Superfamily! Coccoidea holds scale insects! Scales are understudied because they're really difficult to properly ID, it's actually easiest to ID them based on what they're on! I found a pine needle with some, so I think they're Disapididae!

Sorry! I got yesterday wrong for Megachilidae! Leaf cutting bees are more easily seen due to the scopa on their underside. This is why we don't rush through ID, we make mistakes and accidentally spread misinformation.

Bug family of the day! Gerridae are funky little aquatic predators that are more commonly known as water striders! They're easy to sight ID due to their unique adaptation to sit on top of the water using surface tension! Don't confuse them for their little sisters, Veliidae! #bugsky

I wanna start a bug family of the day! So for the first one, I wanna start with the epitome of a "True bug" Miridae! Miridae are plant bugs in the order Hemiptera and the suborder Heteroptera! You can reliably identify mirids by looking at a small segment of their wings called the cuneus!
