One day in Washington Square Park, I came upon a troupe of acrobats performing on the paths. They were ragged and very beautiful in their juggling and feats of balance. They were indifferent to onlookers, who watched them with awe, the crowds expanding.

It’s snowing, and my mistakes are beautiful, no two alike. When I was a kid they called it snow, the nothing on TV that vibrated. I was talking with a friend who is 53, and I realized that when I was 53 I would not have allowed myself to imagine the mind of a person who was 78.

What macho offers men is a way to feel good about despising the image of Woman—as restrictive, morally judgmental, repulsed by men’s animal nature, priggish—that men have invented. Men cheer Dylan and the Beats not in spite of their towering hatred of women but because of it.

One day Richard said to me, “I’m the most patient person you know.” I believed him, and then I wondered if this was an example of brainwashing. I tried to think of other people who liked me more than Richard, and no one came to mind. I tried to think of someone I liked more than Richard. Nada.

In 2002, I drove to Columbus to be a writer-in-residence at Thurber House. The gig included an apartment on the top floor of the nondescript, three-story house where famous woman-hater James Thurber had lived. It sat on a forlorn street, near two highways and a thinly populated business zone.
