So to combat heat stress, we need to consider not only rising temperatures, but changing forms of work

Considering both sides, we can get a good idea of what 2050 will look like for the worker in our global factory
March 17, 2025 at 3:50 AM
But not everyone experiences this risk equally

The time your body spends at unsafe temperatures depends on the work you do - and the roles within that work

If you work in the ironing section of a garment factory, then you spend 10x longer at unsafe temperatures than a cutter
March 17, 2025 at 3:50 AM
The physical impact of working at these temperatures affects every system in the body

But the brain, heart, lungs and kidneys are most severely affected
March 17, 2025 at 3:50 AM
Global temperatures are now 1.5˚C above pre-industrial averages - and still rising every year

This means that intense, once-a-decade heatwaves now happen every 2-3 years

Very excited to announce that Carbon Colonialism will be released in paperback this May!

Hoping to kick start further conversations around the environmental politics of our global factory

Watch this space for more developments...

On the last day of Business of Fashion's VOICES 2024, a reminder of the message Beto Bina, Abi Sivalogananthan and I delivered:

Rising temperatures impact workers health and productivity
The solution is listening

Where factories act on worker concerns heat stress is 75% lower

Voice is everything

18 months ago, I promised garment workers living through one of Cambodia's worst ever heat waves that I would tell their story to brand leaders

Today at @businessoffashion.com.web.brid.gy VOICES 2024 I finally delivered on that promise

Brands, you've heard what's happening. Now it's time to act.

As global temperatures rise, the world's workers are feeling the heat

You could be a part of the solution

📢Year PDRA Position📢

Under climate change, excess heat is a growing global risk But its impact is not equal

Exploited + vulnerable workers are hit first + hardest by rising temperatures

Come work with me at RHUL Geography to find out what we can do:
