It's not just Texas and US south that's affected by measles, Ontario and north Mexico have big outbreaks also. Very important to get your kids vaccinated with the very safe and very effective MMR/MMRV vaccine!

Update: 15 confirmed cases. Health officials are racing to offer vaccines to unvaccinated children, they're operating a mobile unit to screen for cases, pre-treating exposed infants. Schools & hospitals are on alert.

Measles outbreaks are v hard to contain. A totally preventable situation.
🚨Measles mounts in an undervaccinated Texas county. Hospitalizations & 9 cases. Many more expected.

This may be the first big outbreak of 2025 but probably not the last, with vaccine misinformation espoused at the highest levels of government.

So the kid in BC with H5N1 was very sick to the point of needing ECMO. While the majority of human cases have not been severe, this virus has the potential to be as bad as other H5N1s.

At population scale, even infrequently, this is millions of people.

This individual, a woman who worked on a Wisconsin poultry farm with #H5N1 #birdflu infected poultry, has been confirmed as a case by #CDC. National total up to at least 64 confirmed cases in 8 states this year, I believe.

We can't become complacent with these viruses. My quote from the article:

"I don’t think we should characterize 2.3.4.4b viruses as intrinsically less pathogenic compared to earlier clades, because we know that one or two mutations can greatly change the pathogenicity profile of these viruses.”
Scientists who have studied #H5N1 #birdflu for years are flummoxed by the lack of severe cases among the 55 human cases the US has confirmed this year. I talked to lots to explore the theories of what's going on. www.statnews.com/2024/12/02/b...

The H5N1 bird flu outbreak in the U.S. has so far been shockingly mild. Researchers have some theories as to why.

I spoke to @mscribe.bsky.social @theguardian.com about the H5N1 case in BC.

More and more human cases are occurring, along with mutations that indicate further human adaptation.

We need to treat these cases like a warning, because that is what they are.

The preliminary sequence from the H5N1 human case in British Columbia has been posted and it is not good news. The virus potentially has a quasispecies at HA residue 226 (H3 numbering). This is bad news because we know that mutations at residue 226 can increase binding to human receptors. 1/
