Mamdani went to a small college similar to the one where I work and majored in Africana Studies. From now on my answer to the microaggressive question of “what can one (even) do with a Black Studies degree from a liberal arts college?” is “You can run New York.”

To me, Nancy Lemann's novels are canon, but her sole work of nonfiction is stands out. No other book I've read captures the hedonism of New Orleans and the madness of Louisiana politics --- rife with a penchant for kings over the law. Many thanks to @thedriftmag.com for letting me write about it.
