Pleased with my recent cheap auction purchase of William H. Taft campaign items, including the very delightful "Billy Possum" coat button (Billy Possum was Taft's take on TR's Teddy bear). Now to find one of the stuffed Billy Possums pictured in this article... www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-...

Delighted with this very cheeky late 19th/early 20th century button I picked up recently!

More humor in the congressional hearings from the late 1970s...

It's these little asides in the Congressional Record and Congressional Hearings that keep the reading process fun...

Apropos of everything: in 1943, the OWI mounted an exhibit in Rockefeller Center called “The Nature of the Enemy" with vivid tableaux showing fascist methods of political control and the threat posed to the American way of life should the Axis powers win WWII. The images are moving and powerful.

Cece the cat doing a very accurate impression of me everyday as I hear about every new horror and insult.

Huzzah, final grades are submitted! Time to cuddle with Cece the cat and play @asym.bsky.social's Kingdom of Loathing (it is, after all, the Crimbo season in the Kingdom).

Ooh! I have a museum studies thesis student this semester who is writing a bibliography of a 17th century Syriac bible from our Special Collections library as her project...and as a gift she made me this amazing zine about the pressed flowers in the book, with paper that she made herself! So cool!

Well day two of the 2024 SHAFR Conference is off to a banner start for me! I snagged a pair of the coveted Cornell University Press socks, went to an incredibly engaging panel on US, Russia, and the war in Ukraine, AND had the most spectacular sandwich for lunch (Uncle Nibo sandwich @ Eat Nabati).

It was really cool! I think my favorite thing might be the watermarks one of my students found in a bound volume of Spanish colonial documents written between 1602 and 1835 in Mexico City—which they highlighted using a neat slider interactive:

Another fun day in public history: material culture & collections care day, when I have students do condition reports as well as interpretation/analysis of a selection of artifacts. A new addition to my collection for this year was this amazing hairwork mourning brooch. It inspired some great ideas!

Yay! So excited that this edited volume, Missionary Interests, is out with Cornell! It started as a wonderful, generative conference and now thanks to the great editorial leadership of @ccjones.bsky.social and David Golding, it's an exciting book!

This year's Trinity University Decoursey lecture series, featuring the incredible Dr. Ruth Simmons, is about to begin, followed by a conference where the university's Roots Commission will present it's findings to date.

My favorite day in my public history class: the day we go to the university archives to meet the objects for the digital exhibit we'll be creating. This year: incunabula and early manuscripts! 🗃️

Look at this lot of political buttons from FDR's challengers in the 1936 and 1940 elections that I won at auction for $3.58 (for all!)...including a few from the isolationist America First Committee. I particularly like the Willkie button with the key, but all of them will be fun to teach with!

Ahh really excited! We (my band) got our records delivered from the press today! We got some done on gold vinyl and then some (not pictured) on red. I'm really pleased with how everything came out.

Oh man, I have the sweetest students! When I came in this morning, I saw that several students from my US foreign relations class had decorated my office door festively for the season and included references to several of the authors we read & people/events we talked about from our class!
