oh they're definitely playing calvinball, but there is a rhyme and a reason to it still. They would wait for a case that isn't this bad.
They might decide to take up Obergefell in the future, and you'll see HRC front and center once again fighting it. Never say never with this court.

When folks write things designed to make you panic, you should take a breath and ask - is this designed to make me engage? Or is it actually trying to inform?

From the ACLU, the case's litigants:
BREAKING: The Supreme Court granted the Trump administration's request to enforce its discriminatory passport policy while our lawsuit makes its way through the courts.
This decision undermines the freedom of transgender, non-binary, and intersex people to have our IDs reflect who we are.

Honestly reading cringey shit in your late teenage years is a critical part of developing as a decent human. I had a real, real embarassing Dawkins/Dennett/Hitchens capital-A Atheist phase and it probably better insulated me against silly shit later in life

Complexity is hard these days, you're right. But some folks have found a way forward - Andy Beshear in Kentucky is a great example, he pushes to lead with empathy first and keep decisions to parents, schools, athletic associations, etc... not perfect but a damn sight better than demonizing kids

It's not even an 80-20 issue - voters are easily moved on trans people when they get to know us. The fear mongering does not stick.
