Look at these early indicators trending upwards, y’all.
Even if you don’t vibe with public health, this is an economic issue. Emergency department visits are costly. Doesn’t “common sense” tell us that vaccination is the smart solution?

Popping up on LinkedIn from the official HHS and NIH accounts: a bizarre “this not that” statement.

Why not both, y’all?
Don’t make me meme at you. It’s too late and I’m too old and tired.

My sympathies to all the hard-working HHS and NIHers who believe in supporting all aspects of public health.

Count the Career Development Grant for Postdoctoral Women among the casualties of ASM’s recent self-censorship.
Disappointing. I’m a past recipient. The impact of this small grant on my career was huge.
Plus, I believe it’s a donor-funded program (not fed funds).

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week #WAAW

This summer, I took an antibacterial for the first time in ages after developing cellulitis from insect bites/stings. Thankfully, it worked quickly, and I was much improved within 36 hrs. But we can’t take antimicrobials for granted!

Finally stumbled onto the magic setting to get a tolerable LinkedIn feed. Maybe this was obvious to other folks, but I suffered weeks of “recommended for you” thought leader/personal branding baloney before finding this!

Good morning #ASMicrobe!
Stop by poster AES-718 today to chat with awesome ORISE postdoc Yewande Ajao. She is presenting her work on predatory bacteria as killers of Salmonella. We’ll be manuscript writing soon, so feedback is welcome!

Stumbled across this Wikimedia Commons folk culture photography contest, and I feel like it encapsulates some fascinating recent conversations I’ve had with Anthro Husband about how to balance documenting+understanding cultures with respecting+honoring autonomy.

In the interest of correcting this disappointing search result…
Bdellovibrio are super cool. They eat other bacteria. They’re everywhere, and they’re very speedy.
(Seriously, they’re everywhere. Former student Luke isolated Bdellovibrio from a custodial closet drain.)

Should You Believe Wikipedia? Online Communities and the Construction of Knowledge by Amy Bruckman.
Very timely exploration of how we build community in online spaces and how design (good or bad) shapes those communities.

Architecture for Teens by Danielle Willkens.
Even though I’m long past my teen years, this was a great introduction to architecture. Also a nice tactile reading experience - good book design!
