Grandma Clara was sitting in her favourite armchair - the weather was dreadful but the fire delightful, her little bee wax candle was slowly dimming - just a few more drops of wax actually. Could there be a better day? Her favourite book was reread up til the final page she had left for the later evening right before sleep. Her favourite tea was sipped until the last drop- she had left for later, too. She had eaten an orange - she had embroidered her favourite handkerchiefs - she had phoned her daughter. Her granddaughter had sent her a lovely little drawing of three black kittens in a basket. It was on her fridge now. She had watered the plants, she had sweeper the path. A feeling of accomplishment had gotten hold of her. Oh no - someone was missing - but no- relief, there he was, licking her palm, sweet Bouncy, her beloved dog. Her daughter had named him thus. She felt his warmth and feel asleep early. The page, the sip, not forgotten but to be cherished later. With a little fright she stood up. Bouncy - he had left her ten years earlier - his remains deep in the heart of her garden. He looked deep into her eyes, wagging his tail. Ah, now she understood. She also chuckled. Samhain Eve, the perfect date to leave and take a glimpse of her loved ones once a year. She followed Bouncy, both running like in their youth.

Her favourite time of the day was the night. In the daytime she lay in a sunny place - or if not possible- on a warm place - dreaming - feeding a bit…. but at night her whole body trembled and started to itch for movement. Her black fur blended with the night like a second skin. No human soul perceived her leaping from roof to roof - hiding in corners - sprinting on the field. She was the night and the night was her. A favourite animal (story by @lauraskylark.bsky.social )
Her favourite animal in the world was the squirrel and colleagues and friends made use of that information a lot - she got birthday cakes with nuts - socks with tiny woollen squirrels, surprise squirrel postcards and all what they could come up with. She never got bored or fed up with her theme though. Some of her closest friends even made jokes she was secretly a squirrel - with her long elegant teeth, her love for brown raincoats and her reddish -brown curls. Her autumn and winter absences - explained with long stays in warmer areas and workcations with only her laptop and the tropic sea…. also established the impression she did a kind of winter rest - as colleagues and friends missed her happy squirrely personality in the colder part of the year. It was time again - October soon came to a close - the shops were decorated with pumpkins, ghouls and ghosts, the streets smelled like pumpkin spice and rain, she had booked her flights. Her pretence flights which she actually never did board. She walked through the park to her favourite gnarly oak tree. A beauty of 200 years with a rich treasure of acorns and several tree hollows - high above the hustle and bustle of the park visitors. Right now she was alone - as she preferred it. She stripped naked - putting her clothes into a bag she put in a tree hollow just right for it and hid it with leaves. Then the shivering began. Not because of the cold - it was the usual procedure. Her last conscious thought was: “It is not too bad to turn into a were -squirrel for half a year!” Afterwards only soft thoughts came and went - thoughts of sleeping and warmth and snow and hiding places and rest. A comfort.

Own AI art - Native American girl dancing on dry cracked earth No - she could not stop. She had to go on - for hours - maybe days. The mixture she swallowed had to sustain her for this time - her feet moved independently from her brain already. Tap. Tap tap! Next they would try to slaughter a bull. But without the last bull, next year’s calves weren’t going to exist. After that maybe they would eye each other - searching for the weakest link to be sacrificed. No. She would not let it happen. She had to succeed. She urged the musicians to fall into a trance routine - never stopping - constantly playing the sacred notes in a loop she could work with. She would invoke it with her dance. The rain!
