Rare samango monkeys are collateral damage as global heating forces people to move up mountainsides

Who knows if I and lots of other women would've been able to spend so much of our lives running through forests and up and down cliffs after wild primates if Jane Goodall hadn't done it first. RIP.

We're Laura and @andyallan.bsky.social - we study predator-prey interactions, personality and how individuality may shape animal ecosystem roles. We work together in ZA but I'm also a movement ecologist with @uniexecec.bsky.social now creating a system for tracking mongoose in real-time in Uganda

It's helpful when the samango monkeys check on our camera traps. Theyre little good friends

Another leopard sighting after work (same little dude, my shit phone makes everything look far away) and now a couple of lions roaring outside my window in Uganda making sure I don't get to sleep. No complaints.

Little house I'm staying in is completely surrounded by elephants, some 5ft from my door and I have the worst camera on a phone that makes everything look far away and grainy 😭

ESF is hiring a fellow to be an illustrator at one of their field biological stations. It's a beautiful misty secluded place in the Adirondack mountains. I miss ESF so much that I just did some fieldwork nearby. Apply!!!

Working on a new project and hopefully soon 🤞🏻 traveling to Central Africa (small social carnivores) but I started in the US, then worked in Southern Africa on samango monkeys in mist-belt forest ⬇️ and chacma baboon for ~5 yrs. Then moved to carnivores (North America), then more primates, then back!

People who don't think baboons are cute are wrong.

Look at that older kid's tum. @andyallan.bsky.social

High above the forests the baboons scale the cliffs up to their sleep site on top of Mt. Lajuma with @andyallan.bsky.social following and me videoing from a nearby cliff.

This is Afromontane mist-belt forest in the mountains in the far north of South Africa. A bit blurry (shit phone camera) but can you spot the monkeys? (they are there!)

Also I feel like many people outside Central Asia don't know Markhor which is bonkers b/c they're the best (and my dad's favorite animal).
