Alan let me take a look at a denier that circulated in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, and I was 😮. Imagining the coin jingling in the purse of some long ago merchant really made things real for me.

Princeton has a wonderful coin collection, curated by the generous and inimitable Alan Stahl. Here is Alan talking about some of them: middleagesforeducators.princeton.edu/resource/coi...
Coins of Axum (medieval Africa) in the Princeton University Collection
In this video, Princeton Curator of Numismatics Alan Stahl introduces a new and growing collection of coins from the medieval African kingdom of Axum, in the area that is now Ethiopia

Sorry, Hannah, could you interpret this statement for people who are not as technically proficient as they might like to be?
November 20, 2025 at 7:03 PM
I do not understand the incessant need to rank people. For those who claim to be so brilliant, the construct of the "top 10" seems devoid of nuance at best, a complete waste of time & harmful at worst. I know that even making this observation, the response would be, "but who was the best--really?"

Not that I know. Maybe there have been other concerns (aka larger law suits) but it does seem that AI is of a part

Shouldn't @aaup.org be part of this effort?

If I were a parent of 1 of the students in his class, I would have a v. hard time encouraging my child to attend. Teachers teach so much more than the material when they walk into a class (also why AI is garbage). Parents, speak up! Tell Harvard you don't want this model of morality for your child.

yes that is starting to make sense. It is followed by the abbreviation for pounds and then solidi. They just wrote it so far away from the rest of the number that it looks like an abbreviation of some sort. Thanks, team! That was quick work. Medievalists are so cool.

iiiiinteresting. Will take another look. Thank you!

Thank you! I am working with a Sienese scholar, but we had not considered this yet. I'll look into it!

I bet you are!

ooooh pretty. Have fun!

What is interesting is how willing the media is to name individual faculty members, but not the administrators who are fighting the faculty. The administrators are actual people and they need to answer for their actions.

Thanks for this.
You can add sexism & elitism to that list, though I know I have benefitted greatly from the system as it now stands.
So many academics are wonderful people, but the system does not allow them to welcome different ways of thinking & working, which is the point in the first place 😃.
November 14, 2025 at 8:47 PM
I feel the same way about my field. The only answer I have found so far is to just create something (with other brilliant collaborators who are willing) so that what we do will continue to exist. But it is a very very heavy lift, and I'm starting to lose energy and hope, even in these efforts.

Right; probably best to keep air travel to a minimum while air traffic personnel are working on a volunteer basis
November 8, 2025 at 1:46 PM
I’m so sorry to hear this. If it’s any consolation, there are so many of us, academics who are hard working and have made important contributions. Please take care and know it’s the system that is deeply flawed.

it‘s so disappointing to see the grandchildren of those who suffered the very same types of bigotry —using almost the exact same words—dish out the disgusting racism their grandparents endured. they should know better.

It is very lucky for these 2 that democrats are no longer willing to make the kinds of insinuations that Italian Americans used to have to defend themselves from. I'm not going to say it; we have all seen the movies (I am married to an Italian American, so I know about such gross statements).

Here is an article about how that happened (it was neither assumed nor automatically accepted that this was a good idea) muse.jhu.edu/pub/306/edit...
