Also when debuting in 2003, the Bubble Sisters wore blackface. Hardly any backlash was received at the time. However, even though cultural appropriation is widely known today, it still occurs in k-pop. An example of this is Kiss of Life's recent live which was "hip hop themed" and showed them

the members body parts. this is all disguised by the cuteness of the music video and the aegyo performed by the members. i think it is more popular and 'trendy' these days to lean more into cute, pure trends and actions.

As Psy was viewed as a comedic act in the west, he was therefore was not seen as a threat to western masculinity, allowing him to populate the western market. Other K-pop idols such as BTS, who cannot be consumed as minstrelsy, are more likely to be seen as a threat.

When Psy appeared as a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen failed to formally introduce Psy to the audience, resulting in Psy asking ellen if he could introduce himself. This proves the narrative that Psy was seen as an object of humour, and not a valued guest on the show to be taken seriously

The article "Psy-Zing up the mainstreaming of "gangnam style": embracing asian masculinity as neo-minstrelsy" by Micheal. K. Pak highlights despite his success in the west, Psy's value as a musician centered around his minstrel performance, and became an object of humour.

As BTS have such a large fanbase, they would be more inclined to visit Compose Coffee just because their favourite idol is the face of the establishment, therefore generating more sales and promotion for Compose Coffee.

BTS are extremely popular as K-pop idols, but also in the advertising world. The annual modelling fee for BTS per brand in 2021 was ₩5.00 billion KRW (about $3.84 million USD), with the group representing 13 brands at the time.

As this advertisement was a promotional campaign for Compose Coffee's 10th anniversary, they would have wanted to gain a lot attention to boost their sales, which is why V makes sense to be the model of this campaign.
