Sign on the visitor’s center at Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge reads: “Due to a lack of appropriations funding, our staff is out of the office on furlough. This building is currently closed. Refuge trails and hunting areas are open. During this lapse in appropriations, national wildlife refuges will remain as accessible as possible. We are doing our best to take care of your refuges at this time, but some amenities and services may not be available.”

Today’s hike was a nice flat 5 miles at Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge on perhaps the last “hiking in a T-shirt” day of fall.

First time climbing Mt. Wachusett! Saw many hawks, turkey vultures, and a couple ravens at the summit.

Hike of the day: Mt. Pisgah trail in Northborough! This trail was mid, tbh, and full of bugs today, but it still felt good to crush 5 miles of trail and get some fresh air.

Today’s central MA hike: Crow Hill Ledges at Leominster State Forest. Five big hawks flew right past me when I got to the top!

Another gorgeous day for a hike, this time at Wachusett Reservoir (Gate 8). I heard loons and saw a pileated woodpecker!!
Large driftwood logs lying across the gravel path around the edge of the reservoir, with the water and the far side of the wooded shoreline in the distance behind them.
