I absolutely agree that there are many, many smart people who don't have higher educations. I respect the work people put into gaining their degrees, but it doesn't mean that I value them more than anyone else. My highest respect is for people who are kind. And I've encountered similar doctors.

I do think it took significant intelligence to get a PhD in the field in which he obtained his. And there's something to be said for the commitment and hard work involved in that many years of education. I respect the drive of anyone who holds a PhD, even when I disagree with their views.
