Coincidentally my mum's registration plate was cloned in October. Luckily she was shopping in Somerset when the driver with her cloned plate was caught driving dangerously in Essex. She provided her card receipt as evidence but never heard a conclusion to the case, either way 🤷‍♀️

This is a refrain we heard in the inquiry, too. People with multiple plates pulling over in laybys and switching them over in broad daylight

Yes it's an issue - until people grasp the far-reaching implications of the problem, that tends to be the response. So police/professional training is among our recommendations.

From the tens of thousands of unvetted registration plate producers handling people's ID documents, to criminals operating with impunity on the roads, to road safety and justice, to the safety of women and girls, the implications of the registration plate system's flaws are incredibly far reaching.

The humble number plate, our report finds, is desperately lacking in the appropriate security measures for such an important personal identifier, from the rules and checks governing who produces them, to their use and tampering on the roads, to finding lawbreakers and bringing them to justice
