Sadly, my current options are Google Docs or getting several files a week named things like Article4_LK_editv3_final_v2.doc.

In my experience it's that I use those kind of docs collaboratively with lots of coworkers, so the convenience of having it all online with good sharing capabilities is more important than the benefits of working locally.
